IDIOMS AND PROVERBS

TALES FROM THE MOBILE ZONE ( translation )

What do managers, cendol-sellers, businessman, fishmongers, remisiers , college students and housewives have in common? The mobile phone of course.

Gone were the days when handphone foters used to get envious look from the have-nots. In today’s high-tech, high-speed world, a handphone is a necessity to keep in touch, to get ahead or to get the juicy gossip across.

“So what if u get handphone, I also got what “, any Muthu, Ali or Ah Cheng can snigger. Surely we have, at one time or another, come across a cartoon strip that showed a handphone ringing and everybody whipping at their handphone from their handbag, briefcase, pocket, haver sack or whatever. Most people disregard the “no handphone” signs put up at the entrance except at hospitals where it could mean life or death when handphone signals could interfere with life saving equipment. Other than that, it‘s really no surprise when in the midst of lecture, while going up at the bank or during that exciting car-chase scene at the movies, a “beep-beep” sounds loud and clear followed by an even louder grumpy noise “haloo….”

Valentina Hassan ( Ken Lee) VS Mariah Carey ( Without you )

Ken Lee (correct pronunciation: "Can't live") is a garbled interpretation of the song "Without You", performed by Valentina Hasan , a contestant auditioning for the Bulgarian show Music Idol in February 2008. For the first time I hear her singing I thought it was a language that I never heard before. The sound really weird and funny. But, when she said it is English, I really surprised. How can she sing like that?

In an interview, she explained to the Bulgarian media that she had no knowledge of English. She had just learned the song by heart and by ear, by listening to it repeatedly on a cassette recorder, and "sang it the way she felt it”. Now, I know why she singing like that way. If I in her shoes , I will do the same think. For example, when singing a Korean or Japanese song. I am not really good in their language but I will sing that what I heard.

I am proud of her because she brave to sing the Ken Lee in front of audience even they laughing at her. She have to learn more to improve her English. She should know the original lyric and she can feel the song better when she sing it. Furthermore , we should respect other language. For me, when she sang like it seems like she destroy the English language.

I think Mariah Carey will feel so sad when her song got a very bad sound ever and Ken Lee more famous than her original song “Without you” (^_^) . However, Valentina Hasan is a good performer. She can learn more about singing because she have a nice voice. She really entertain me. Thank you.
